The Cross Is Lifted Up

Jesus Christ is fastened to the wooden cross as executioners strain to raise it upright on Golgotha. Soldiers, laborers, onlookers, and grieving women gather around the brutal work of crucifixion, while two other crosses stand in the background for the condemned men crucified with Him. The body of Christ, stretched upon the timber and marked by wounds, becomes the center of the scene as the instrument of Roman shame is lifted into view. The women below, including the sorrowing motherly figure near the foot of the cross, witness the fulfillment of the Passion. This artwork presents the moment when the Son of Man is publicly exalted in suffering, revealing the paradox of the Gospel: through humiliation, sacrifice, and blood, redemption is accomplished.
