Jeremiah sits among the rocks above a devastated Jerusalem, his hand raised in grief and appeal as smoke rolls over the broken city walls. Beside him, a scribe records the prophet’s words on a scroll, giving visual form to the mournful witness preserved in Lamentations. Below them, scattered survivors move away from the ruins, echoing Judah’s exile after the Babylonian destruction of the city.

The artwork presents the prophet not as a distant observer, but as an intercessor who feels the wound of his people. Lamentations grieves the fall of Jerusalem while confessing that judgment came through covenant unfaithfulness. Yet within that sorrow, Jeremiah’s testimony still points toward the mercy of God, whose compassion is not exhausted even in ruin. This image serves themes of repentance, exile, prophetic ministry, national lament, and hope after judgment.
