A robed figure’s wounded heel presses down upon the serpent, leaving blood on the ground as the snake coils around the feet and opens its mouth in defeat. The composition visualizes the first gospel promise in Genesis 3:15: the seed of the woman will be bruised, yet the serpent’s head will be crushed. The injured heel speaks of suffering, while the serpent underfoot declares judgment over evil and the coming victory of the promised Deliverer.
